PERUR TEMPLE

Perur Temple

This Temple is 7 kms from Coimbatore Railway Station and was constructed by Karikal Cholan over 1500 years ago. There are shrines to the presiding deity Patteeswarar and his consort Pachainayaki and some elegantly carved sculptures in the Kanagasabai hall. Devotees flock to this temple in hundreds during the Panguni Uthiram festival which is celebrated in March every year.

Marudhamalai Temple

Dedicated to Lord Subramanya, this hilltop temple is one of the most visited temples in the region, the reason being that the residing deity Dandayuthapani is believed to have performed several miracles here. Thai Poosam and Tirukarthigai festivals are celebrated with great pomp and gaiety at this temple. Marudhamalai is 12 kms from the Railway Station.

Thirumoorthy Temple (20 kms.)

It is situated at the foot of Thirumoorthy Hills adjoining the Thirumoorthy Dam. This is about 20 kms. from Udumalpet on the Highway from Palani to Coimbatore. A perennial stream flows by the side of the Sri Amalingeswarar temple and nearby there is a waterfalls. The Crocodile Farm at Amaravathi Dam is just 25 kms. from here. This place is being developed as a District Excursion Centre. Regular buses are available from Udumalpet.

Arulmigu Sulkkal Mariamman Temple

Sulakkal is also one of the small place among other places like Aanaimalai. Since this Amman stood with Sulam in that place, the place was called as Sulakkal. The temple was amidst think forest with dangerous animals and harmful insects. Sulakkal Mariamman stood there to save the near by village people. Slowly people came to know about Amman and they started worshipping her. The dense forest was destroyed and beautiful. The people of that place made Temple for Amman.

Arulmigu ThanduMariamman Temple

This temple is located at 2 kms from Coimbatore Railway station. The temple was built during the period of Tippu Sultan. This temple has got a very unique origin. The story behind its origin goes in this way. Thandumariamman appeared in the dream of a soldier of Thippu Sultan and said she has been living in the forest for very long time, the following morning that soldier went to the forest in search of the goddess and found her beside a Neem tree. Overjoyed by the goddess's dharisanam, he showed her to his countrymen and finally the temple was built in that place. Soon the news spread allover and was worshipped by the name ThanduMariamman.

Arulmigu Velangiri Andavar Temple

This temple is located at 20 kms from Coimbatore towards Siruvani. Velliyangiri is a beautiful temple situated in one amongst the five hills of historical importance. The five hills symbolically represents the five different faces of Lord Siva. This is the only temple where Pancha Linga can be seen.

Arulmigu Eachnari Vinayagar Temple

The temple is located at 10 kms from Coimbatore on pollachi road. It is one of the oldest temple in Coimbatore and dates back to 1500 A.D The moolavar at this temple was actually meant for Perur Patteswarar temple and since it got struck on its way from Madurai, Eachanari became the blessed place. The deity's height is 6 feet and the width is 3 feet and is one of the biggest in South India.

Anuvavi Subramanyaswamy Temple

This temple is located at periathadagam which is 12 kms away from Coimbatore. The main deity of this temple is lord Subramanayam (Murugan). The story behind this holy place goes such that during the war between Rama & Ravana, Laxmana becomes unconscious by the arrows used by Indhrajith (Son of Ravana ), in that situation Aanjaneya (Hanumaan) was asked to bring the Sanjeeve Herb from Sanjeeve Hills. On his way back Aanjaneya felt very thirsty and stopped in this place to quench his thirst. Unfortunately Lord Aanjaneya could not find water in that area. So he prayed to Lord Muruga for water. Lord Muruga appeared with Deivanai and with the help of his weapon "VEL" pierced on this hill and water started to ooze out from the hill which helped Lord Aanjaneya to quench his thirst. Even today the villagers of this area use the natural water from that particular pond for drinking and other purposes.

Arulmigu Chokkalingeswarer Temple

This temple is located at 18 kms from Coimbatore on Mettupalayam road. The place Perianaickenpalayam where the temple is situated was called as Gudalur in early days. The temple was established during the 14th Century it has got a dynamic architecture on either side of the walls on the "Moolasthanam" there are carvings of a Tortoise, a Fish and a Snake. The Sanctum Sanctorm of this temple facing west unlike many other temples (in South India) whose Sanctum Sanctorum faces east, is a special feature. Yet another unique feature of temple is that all the deities are with their consorts.

Infant Jesus Church Kovaipudur

Infant Jesus Church is quite a famous Church situated in Kovaipudur. Devoteed throng the church on Thursdays for attending the Novenoe.

Coimbatore Kottai Hidayathul Islam Safia Jamath Kottaimedu

This mosque is located 1 km away from Railway station. It is known for its architectural structures. This was the first Mosque to be built in Coimbatore. Arabic college is also part of the Mosque.

Arulmigu Koniaman Temple

In the olden days for every Shiva Temple, there would be a guarding deity in its northern boundary. According to legendry Arulmigu Koniamman Temple is supposed to be of this style, on the northern side of Kottai Easwaran Temple. The history of the temple and deity dates back to 13th Century A.C.

A leader of a small cult known as "IRULAS" six hundred years ago built the temple situated in the heart of the City. The small village was also named "Covanputhur" after the leader of this group, whose name was "Covan". According to the "Cholan Poorva Pattayam" in the Madras oriental Manuscript library this Covanputhur later changed as Coimbatore. This ancient temple was situated in the north of Coimbatore near Sanganur stream. Later when there was a fear "Chera" invasion the illangosar tribe which was ruling at that time, built a new fort and to guard this fort, they built a temple and named the predominant deity as Koniamman of this temple. After the tribes ruling came to an end, the temple also had a sluggish period. Realizing the importance of this temple, during the Mysore dynasty one of its kings renovated the temple and conservated the Devi Koniamman in the style of "Mahisasuramardhini". From then on until today goddess Konniamman blesses her people with love and grace.

The people of Coimbatore have strong belief in the powers of this goddess. The deity grants her followers, whatever they want when they pray her with all sincerity and faith. The sculptural beauty of the present statue is marvelous.

Annul Car Festival:

Number of festivals are celebrated in this temple, but the annual Car Festival is celebrated with all pomp and pageantry. The whole City's atmosphere is changed and people from far and near gather to have the "Dharshan" of deity in the Sanctum Sanctorium in the beautifully decorated car through the important streets during this festival.

Arulmigu Kulanthai Velayuthaswamy Temple

This temple is located 24 kms from Coimbatore. It is one of the most beautiful temples and was built around 750 years ago. The architectural aspects of this temple are fabulous. This temple is situated on a hill covered with kurunda trees and hence it got it name "Kurunda Malai". The natural scenaries around this temple adds beauty to this temple. It is believed that "Thiru Agasthiya Munivar " got Manthira upadesham from Lord Muruga Temple. The main deity of this temple is Lord Muruga.

Arulmigu Sithalingeswar Temple

This temple is situated at 2 kms distance singanalur police station. Palani Murugan was the world first Navapashana Murugan, created by Pokar. Next to Navapasahana of Murugan, the Navapashana lingam made up of Navapasahana is situated at Sithalingeswarer Aalayam at vellalur near to Coimbatore. It took 10 years to make this 8 feet Lingam. It is believed that to create one pashanam for this lingam took one year. Similarly 9 years for completion and one more year for to remove the poisonous content from the pasanam to change it as Amirtham. People believe that, this Shivapasana Lingam has more power. Presently Navapashana Lingam is situated at Kovai vellalur Sithalingeswarer Temple and has its own importance. Surrounding this temple the other states are Dhurgai, Dhatchinamoorthi, Sandikeswarer, Lingothpavar and Baktha Aanjaneyar is getting ready. This Navapasahana Shivalinga statue was prepared here only for the first time in the world level.

Palani

The temple of Lord Muruga is located on the Palani Hills. The presiding deity is Dandayuthapani. The idol is made of medicinal herbs, it is one of the six abodes of Lord Muruga and one of the major Pilgrim centres is South India next only to Thirupathi. An electrically operated winch takes the pilgrims to the top. It is 105 kms. from Coimbatore.

Kodumudi

It is 40 kms. from Erode and 105 kms. from Coimbatore. A special feature of this place is that shrines for Siva, Vishnu and Brahma are located in one temple complex. Siva is known as Muchukundeswarar, Vishnu as Veera Narayana Perumal. The temple is one of the important temples in Periyar district
